Much of the stress we experience we can bring on ourselves. We don’t have to know what is happening in the world every few hours. We don’t have to compare ourselves to the wonderful lives others are living on social media. We don’t have to stress that we’re are out of touch because we use Facebook and the younger generation does not. This anxious world is catapulting toward an even more anxious existence. One can allow negative thoughts to enter in at any time. Guarding your heart is so important to maintain your peace.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things… and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9
What are we reminding ourselves today? How about: God loves you and He is for you. Though your circumstances may not be what you prefer, God is sovereign over everything and has a plan for you. Be thankful, pray and do not allow your anxiety to increase.
It is helpful to be reminded as well that God is also sovereign over the problems in the world. He is in control. He is in charge. Worrying won’t help.
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Matthew 6:27
Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:34
Take a Sabbath from the news or other anxiety-producing activities that fill your mind. We need not be ignorant of what is happening in the world, but we should not obsess over what we cannot control or influence. Remember Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you, I do not give as the world gives, do not let your hearts be troubled. Do not be afraid.”
