It does not happen all at once. It is by his grace, yet we are to do something about it. We need to put ourselves in a position to receive from God:

On his law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:2
I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. Psalm 34:1
We need to ask and also wait patiently and believe that he will answer.
I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. Psalm 40:1
If you struggle believing cry out just as the man did to Jesus (in the healing of his son) I believe help my unbelief.
If we take the step to move toward God, confess our sins, ask for his grace and mercy, He will respond in ways wonderful and surprising!
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Psalm 34:8-10
